The ruin of the castle Ardeck

Vast - directly at the B54, roughly at the same level as the village community Holzheim - stands on steep rock made form resistance volcano porphyry stone the ruin of the castle Ardeck.

The small but still very valiant castle was built ca 1395 by the earl Adolph von Diez and Nassau as states castle of the shire Diez . Since the extinction of the noblemen in Diez in the year 1727 the castle became derelict. The castle ruin was transferred in the year 1986 to the community Holzheim and has become its landmark.

Today only the 21,6m high donjon at the south corner and a part of the   Berings are still there.

The by now totally dilapidated castle ruin can be visited anytime.

It is well worth a visit! Not only the view in direction Diez and into the Aar valley are lovely; upon entering one really feels as though one has stepped back in time.

So no surprise then that the picturesque castle Ardeck has become by now the event place for the Ardecker Burgfestspiele (castle festival). Every two years the castle ruin becomes background for the local theatre club, which builds an open-air stage at the yard.

Every summer there also takes place A historical farmers market takes place there every summer.
